Digestion
Digestion involves the breakdown of large molecules in food into smaller units. For example, the breakdown of protein into amino acids. Adequate stomach aid is particularly important, not only for digestion, but also for protecting against pathogenic organisms and food antigens. The overuse of antacids medication (used for gastric hyper- acidity) has been shown to inhibit digestion of proteins and cause food intolerances by lowering gastric HCL levels. Stomach acid decreases with age, medication or underlying medical conditions, so it is important to address the root causes. A condition known as HYPOCHLORHYDRIA is also associated with higher levels of the organism Helicobacter Pylori, SIBO (Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and candida overgrowth. Adequate absorption of vitamin B12 is also compromised by low stomach acid along with iron deficiency anaemia and osteoporosis through poor mineral absorption. Those with low levels of hydrochloric acids are more prone to intolerances and leaky gut syndrome due to an environment more conductive to the presence of bacteria, yeasts and parasites.
The body produces many enzymes that work to break down specific nutrients. Enzyme Amylase comes into forms – salivary and pancreatic to help break down starch. Enzyme Protease (released via the pancreas) helps to break down protein. Lipase is a fat digesting enzyme also released via the pancreas. Another important enzyme is Amyloglucosidase, which breaks down the complex fibres found in legumes and beans, so the key nutrients can be absorbed. The presence and secretion of appropriate amounts of specific digestive enzymes is essential for healthy digestion and absorption of nutrients.
To address low stomach acid and digestive enzyme issues, a combination of dietary changes, supplements and lifestyle changes can be beneficial. What works for one person may not work for another, so be patient or work with your qualified professional to find what suits you best.
Natural remedies to improve digestion:
· Bromelain has been used successfully as a digestive enzyme following pancreatectomy, in cases of pancreas insufficiency and in other intestinal disorders. It has anti – inflammatory and antihistamine properties.
· Ginger helps to stimulate enzyme activity and it is consider tonic for the digestive tract. It may protect the stomach from damaging effect of alcohol and common pain killers, such as ibuprofen.
· Green foods are chlorophyll rich super-foods providing an abundance of nutrients. It normalizes the secretion of digestive acids. The chlorophyl rich alkaline effects of cereal grasses and other green foods help overcome cases of HYPERACIDITY, control the growth of unwanted microorganisms and detoxify the liver.
· Gentian is one of the most bitter plants, that triggers the vagus and hyperglossal nerves, located at the back of the tongue, where the bitter flavour stimulates the release of gastric enzymes and hydrochloric acid.
· Betaine Hydrochloride is an acidic form of betaine, a vitamin-like substance found in grains and other foods. It is often recommended by professionals for people who have a deficiency of stomach acid (HCl acid). It has also been used in connection with other health conditions (Acne Rosacea, chronic Candidiasis, Gallstones, GERD, Hives, Heartburn, Rheumatoid Arthritis)
